The In ̄uence of the Indenter Tip-Radius on Indentation Testing of Brittle Materials
نویسنده
چکیده
Indentation testing of a brittle material using a notionally `sharp' indenter may reveal several important physical properties, including fracture toughness, surface ®nish information and the residual stress state. In the case of shallow cone indenters, the contact and fracture mechanics is well de®ned and closed-form solutions exist in elasticity theory. However, no real indenter is atomically sharp, and the scope of the present article is to quantify how a ®nite apex radius may modify the stress state induced by a conical indenter. In particular, implications for the load-displacement relation, occurrence of yielding and maximum contact pressure induced are found. A brief discussion of the in ̄uence of edge radius on the ̄at-ended indenter, once used to induce Hertzian type ring cracks, is also included, as this may be treated by a similar procedure. # 1998 Elsevier Science Limited. Characterization of Rockwell hardness indenter Tip using image processing and optical profiler and evaluation of measurement uncertainty
Hardness is a measure of the resistance of a material to be penetrated and eroded by sharp projections of other materials such as diamond. The process of creating sharp projections on any test surface is known as indentation. Hardness measurement of any material is the result of a complex process of deformation during indentation. The indenter tip geometry, which includes radius of curvature at...
متن کاملCrack nucleation criterion and its application to impact indentation in glasses
Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are used to directly observe nucleation of median cracks in oxide glasses under indentation. Indenters with sharp angles can nucleate median cracks in samples with no pre-existing flaws, while indenters with larger indenter angles cannot. Increasing the tip radius increases the critical load for nucleation of the median crack. Based upon an independent set of...
متن کاملEvaluation of Sinking-In and Cracking Behavior of Soda-Lime Glass under Varying Angle of Trigonal Pyramid Indenter
It is well known that glass undergoes elastic and inelastic deformation under a sharp diamond indenter. Although brittle or less brittle behavior of glass must be connected with such mechanical responses of glass under the indenter, there has been limited research on in situ deformation behavior of glass during the loading and unloading indentation cycle. This is because most indentation tests ...
متن کاملIndenter tip radius effect on the Nix–Gao relation in micro- and nanoindentation hardness experiments
Nix and Gao established an important relation between microindentation hardness and indentation depth. Such a relation has been verified by many microindentation experiments (indentation depths in the micrometer range), but it does not always hold in nanoindentation experiments (indentation depths approaching the nanometer range). We have developed a unified computational model for both microan...
متن کاملFinite element analysis of elastic-plastic solids under Vickers indentation: surface deformation
Finite element modeling has been used to study the development of surface deformation during indentation with a Vickers indenter. A wide range of materials with different elastic modulus and yield stresses are examined. Results show that in a pyramidal indentation process, for a perfectly plastic material, sinking-in during loading can change to pile-up in unloading. This phenomenon depends on ...
